Wish it was easier?
A couple of weeks ago, I bumped into this Jim Rohn quote that you might have heard before. It’s been rattling around my head ever since.
Don’t wish it was easier, wish you were better.
Don’t wish for less problems, wish for more skills.
Don’t wish for less challenges, wish for more wisdom.
It sounds nice, but what does it actually mean for those of us trying to start a business? If I may, let me extend this timeless piece of wisdom into a few brief startup meditations.
No more wishes
Don’t wish for easier sales meetings. Wish you were better at recognizing the quality of lead in front of you. Warm or cold? Adjust your approach and expectations accordingly. Colder leads are always harder to advance than warmer ones, no matter how good you are.
Don’t spend years aimlessly clinging to a product idea. Wish you had a more effective validation process. Look at the results, then move on.
Don’t randomly spew desperate self-promotion. Wish you could learn to choose a marketing channel, run experiments, and go deep when there’s a fit. Promote intentionally.
Don’t show anger when you’re on the losing side of luck. Wish you could remain calm during killed deals, tanked marketing posts, and slow days.
Don’t let negative short-term results discourage you. Wish you could be faithful to a long-term winning strategy.
